I went to a birthday party this weekend and there were 3 chef's there that all had questions about Let's Eat Cake! so I thought adding these questions to the list of FAQ's might be a good idea:

You do need to cut and serve your own cake, the cake that you are serving to the the judges and the general public will need to be cut and served by you - you can do this in advance, however, keep in mind that if guests have questions they might want or need to ask you. They might want to hire you, so having business cards might be a good idea. Although when they arrive we will be providing a legend with your basic information.
You will need to provide your own knife and cake server. However, if needed we will supply cup cake liners for you to serve your cake on.
We will be suppling forks for all of the guests.
Your cake display table is 66", that is a BIG table!!!! Normally that table would seat 8-10 people! So be prepared to make your cake really pop on that big table. That is also the cake that your pieces of cake will be served on/from - and you'll have a 6' banquet table behind your cake it will look like this { | O} the guests will walk in front of the "O" {round table} and your serving station, will be behind the round.
You don't need to decorate the banquet table, only the round table. You can decorate your round display table from 3-4 while you are setting up your cake.
Your table must be fully decorated by 4PM without any indication as to who made the cake.
At 5PM you will be allowed back in to place any information about yourself or your bakery on the table. At roughly 5:15 we will be allowing in VIP's to start the event!
If you are donating a cake for the auction, please make sure you turn that in with you upon signing in for the event.
Sign in starts at 2:30, you can bring all of your cake supplies in at that time, but cannot set anything in the ballroom until 3PM.

FAQ's

Our event is coming up so quickly!

So many questions have come up, I'd like to address a few, and if you have any more questions that I don't answer here, please email me at melissa {at} masterpieceweddings {dot} net

How big is my table, what is the set up like?

You as a baker {either amatuer or pro} will have a 66" table to display your dummy cake to the judges and the general public. You will also have a banquet table behind you, a 6 foot standard banquet table. Each table will have standard linens.

If you'd like to have something "pretty" or "colorful" you'd have to bring you own.

How many servings of cake will I need? Can I serve the judges what I am serving the general public?

You will need 200 small servings of cake for the general public. There will be 4 judges in each category, both professional and amatuer. I would recommend serving something "prettier" to the judges, with an explaination of what they are eating. For example: Chocolate Cake with Cherry Moose filling

How should I serve my cake to the general public?

We are going to provide standard cake plates for the each baker, along with a fork for each guest. If you would prefer to prepare head, and slice your cake in advance. You may do so, and decide not to utlize what we provide.

What time can I arrive for check in and set up?

Baker's check in is a t 2:30, you can arrive starting at 2:30, but must be setting up your cake no later than 3:15, and be done no later than 4PM. There will be a strict time limit on this. At 4PM you will be asked to leave the Main Ball Room, and you can re-enter at 5PM to adorn your table with your business cards, and whatever else you'd like.

Please remember that nothing that signifies your business may be allowed on your table until after the judging.

Can I make the cakes for the judges prettier than the cakes for the general public?

Yes, you most certainly can! There will be 4 judges. So plan accordingly.

Can I bring an assitant to help me set up the cake?

Yes, you can bring 1 person to help you set up the cake. However any other family members or friends, must pay the entry fee of $25 in advance or $35 at the door.

I'd rather do mini cup cakes for the tasting, is that okay?

Yes, you can do whatever you'd like for the tasting, as long as you have enough for everyone.

I'd still like to donate a cake to the auction, can I?

YES! Bring the cake with you to the event, and we'll handle late cake auction entrants.

Well, I just hung up the phone with her, and she is going to Judge Let's Eat Cake! - so now you are either thinking one of two things...

1. I want to compete!!! {so what are you waiting for! turn in your forms - the deadline is the end of the month!!!!}

2. I don't want to compete!!! {Don't be a baby.... it's for charity, and she's really an wonderfully, sweet and humble person..... don't believe what you've heard!!!}

I honestly, am just thrilled to death, and now my dream is complete!!! Thank you to Kerry for taking the time out of your crazy busy schedule and moving thngs around for us!

I am so excited to announce this next Judge! Anita Boeth, has been a friend of mine for more years that I can count! She is an amazing Wedding Consultant and a dear, dear friend. She has seen a bazillion wedding cakes, and tasted just as many! Her expertise will be appreciated!

Anita Boeth, owner of Boeth Productions Wedding and Event Planning joined the wedding industry in 1992 as a florist while completing her degree in Hospitality Administration with an emphasis in Event Management from Florida State University. She has worked in the wedding business as a catering manager, wedding sales manager and bridal registry coordinator. She has planned many celebrity weddings in Florida, The Virgin Islands and throughout the country. In 2007 she co-founded Wedding Planners International where she mentors aspiring planners in their quest to start a successful career.

Anita has been published in Industry Magazine, The Knot Magazine and served as a coordinator for The Knot’s Annual Vendor Appreciation Party.

Despite her success she considers her greatest accomplishment as being a mom to two beautiful sons, ages 5 and 1 ½. Anita recently retired to be a stay at home mom.

He has such a beautiful history making cakes for dignitaries, and celebrities alike. We are so blessed to have him on our team!

Who We Are Helping!

The other day I was on my way home, and when I got into the car there was this commercial on the radio that brought tears to my eyes about children being the future - as I sat there sobbing, the tag line came up that said "Helping St. Jude's..." curing childhood diseases.

I knew I was doing the right thing, right then and there.

This is a picture of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, on of my of my favorite brides, Michelle's nephew who was treated at St. Jude. Her cousin Ben Barcklay was diagnosed with brain cancer at 8 years old. This meant surgery, chemo, blood and bone marrow transfusions and radiation.

He and his mom lived at St Jude (and the Target House) for 2 years. St Jude's paid for everything and even flew Ben's dad and sister from California to visit every month.

He was on Oprah and the Today show and was featured in Redbook, so if you feel the need for a good cry, look him up.

It should be pointed out that St Jude isn't just for families without insurance. My cousins have insurance... it just wont pay the bills that rack up over 2 years of treatment AND travel AND living there while getting treatment.

I am thrilled to annouce Paige Beck as a judge for Let's Eat Cake! she is an avid baker, was a finalist in the US Chef's Open, has taken many decorating class, and just plain loves cake! {that's the main ingredient we are looking for in our judges} Paige is our local foodie, any segment on our local news WCJB {our local ABC Affiliate} she is all about!

Dreams and Fears

I was hesitant to post this… it’s something I hold near and dear to my heart – but it’s also part of who I am, and part of why I am planning this fundraiser for this cause.

A little known fact, that I don't normally share about myself, is that I myself am a cancer survivor. I was diagnosed a little over 3 years ago with Cervical Cancer {non-HPV} it was caught fairly early, but when you hear that “C” word, you think so many things. I don’t think I spent much time wallowing, I live my life, regardless or what’s thrown at me. I never stopped working – ever. I don’t think I was scared until the day of surgery…and eventually, that surgery and a few treatments, I have been cancer free for 3 years 5 months.

As an adult you have fears and dreams and goals, as a child you just dream. Children don’t necessarily comprehend the fight and fear that I was faced with. Their parents do. That is why a lot of these kids go to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. Because these kids were diagnosed with cancer. A Cancer they can’t just dream away.

My treatment was fully covered by my insurance. I was blessed!

These kids don’t have those blessings. I am asking you to help these kids dream, and grow. Live life, so that one day they have the life that we now have. Lots of people are blessed with healthy children {my family included} but unfortunately lots of families blessed with children that become unhealthy. That’s why St. Jude’s is such a blessing.

Help me, help these kids be cancer free. With Cake!

Daunting

It can be a daunting task planning an event with a goal of $50,000 – so I decided to break it down into numbers I can wrap my head around.

It costs $30 for St. Jude’s to Inoculate kids. That mean that if 50 people donated $30, we’d be $1500 closer to our goal!

It costs $150 for St. Jude’s to provide respiratory therapy to one child.

And $200 for Professional Fee’s for an initial work-up.

These numbers are small, our goal is large, but remembering that every penny helps is important!

And also remember that eighty-six cents of every dollar that St. Jude’s raises goes directly to research and health care services is important!

A few updates for Cake Lovers! Let's Eat Cake! is now offering online donations, you can donate in any denomination that suits you, just use the Chip In icon on the right side of the screen and donate safely through Paypal! Or you can mail your donation to our headquarters.

Let's Eat Cake! Is so happy to announce that Jaden Hair of Steamy Kitchen is going to Judge Let's Eat Cake! Her experience, talents, great food, and fun attitude are just a few of the many, many reasons that we are so excited to have her on-board!!!

And be on the look out for her new cookbook that will be hitting your favorite bookstore shelves... soon, well, soon enough (but not soon enough for me!).

I almost feel guilty for continuing to ask for donations, but after all this is for the kids of St. Jude's and this community has been so giving and generous!

So I ask once again....I am in need of prizes for our winners! If you know anyone that is willing to give any prize packages for bakers - pans, icing, Rubbermaid containers, gift certificates, really...fun anything!

My dream is to be able to give a trip away...

We've Got Rooms!!!

If you are interested in staying overnight while you are in town for Let’s Eat Cake! We have a block of rooms reserved for Contestants, Judges, Attendee's, basically everyone at The Paramount Plaza Resort – they have given us single or double rooms for a great rate of $75 a night! (for February 16th and 17th)

Just make sure to mention Let's Eat Cake!

We are getting so many chef's and bakers that have already started sketching out their cakes! I am so excited to see what these super fabulous chef's are coming up with!

Cake Rules!

Some questions have come up as to the Rules of the Cake Competition, just to clarify here are a few of the rules..

*Competing cakes must be at least 2 1/2 feet tall in the Professional Category

*The competing cake must be faux (a Dummy Cake)

*Tasting cakes for General Public and Judges are sheet cakes

Those are the intial rules, and the most frequently asked questions that have been coming up! I hope that helps!

Cake Auction!

I was trying to think of fun activities to add to "Let's Eat Cake!" a Cake Eating Contest... messy and YUCK! No that was nixed!

So I've decided to do a Cake Auction! This way bakers (home and professional alike) can bake pretty cakes and we auction those off! How fun (and not messy)!!

I am getting so excited, February 17th can't come soon enough!

The Paramount Plaza and Resort in Gainesville, Florida will be the back drop for our First Let's Eat Cake Competition!!!

The newly renovated hotel has been gracious enough to donate their services to our event, and I think this lakeside property will be the perfect back drop to this event!!!

Meet Chef Jamie McFadden, he is going to be one of the judges for Let's Eat Cake! Chef Jamie was named one of Central Florida's top 20 Chef's by Restaurant Forum! He was featured on NBC's Dinner in the Sky segment, and is just a fun guy to work with.

I am super excited to have him on our Judging Panel!

Let's Eat Cake! is a Wedding Cake Competition. Pastry Chef's and Bakers will gather with their faux cakes that will be judged by World Renowned Pastry Chef's and Celebrities alike on their artistic abilities, details, intricate work and overall beauty. (and of course taste!)

Then we'll invite in the general public to taste all of the cakes (basically a Wedding Cake Schmogisborg) and they'll judge the cakes on taste as well.

We'll crown a winner in the following categories:

People Choice Award for Taste
Amateur 1st Place in Design
Professional Chef 1st Place in Design
Professional Chef 1st Place in Taste

I am so excited to be planning this event!! I feel blessed to be guided to St. Jude's Children's Hospital to help the kids.

We Gotta Have Faith!

Have you ever had a dream, and just felt so moved afterwards to do something about it? I did.

One day last year I woke up from a deep sleep and a very vivid dream – I remember every moment of this dream as if it had happened in real life. And I decided to take action.

When I awoke I explained to my husband what my dream was about and he said, “You sound so charged – do something with that energy, make it happen!” So I am!

We are hosting our first National Fundraiser! And I couldn’t be more excited!
